[14]Shoes · Marathon Frequently Asked Questions
There’s no hard and fast answer, but you should aim to start wearing them for at least a few weeks before, and for several long runs. That way you can get used to them, stretch them out to the right fit and avoid any unpleasant surprises on the day.
You should get new shoes at least 1 month before a marathon race. The most important part of getting new shoes before a marathon is how long you’ll have to break them in. New shoes take 10-20miles to break in and you’ll want to make sure you’ve done a few short runs and 1 long run to check they will be comfortable and supportive for the marathon itself.
While it’s advisable that you do some running in your marathon shoes before the big event, it’s wise to avoid using them too frequently on long runs beforehand as you may wear them out or reduce the performance beforehand.
