You can thank the French for the tradition of tennis players wearing polos. Before the 20th century, players in England and elsewhere wore tennis whites that were inspired by cricket kits. These outfits included heavy long-sleeve shirts typically buttoned up to the neck. In the 1920s, French tennis champion René Lacoste came up with a less bulky alternative: a collared shirt with short sleeves, a button front and a long back hem — the tennis polo. The tops remain popular because they're lightweight and easy to move in.

Tennis and golf polos are similar — both are made with lightweight fabric. Both generally have short sleeves, a two- or three-button front and a shirt collar. The differences are in the construction: Tennis polos often use materials like polyester or blends that wick away moisture and keep the player cool during active play. Golf polos may use cotton, cotton blends or moisture-wicking materials, and some have a pocket to carry items like scorecards and pencils. Golf polos may have other features that don't appear on tennis polos, such as double-stitched collar points and loose, double-stitched cuffs.
